Tidings of Comfort and Joy - 10 Strategies for Self-Care and Boundaries this Holiday Season

There was a meme a few years back that described someone ‘trading their regular anxiety for their sparkly Christmas anxiety’. This post is of course for you - but also for anyone wanting to enjoy the season without the usual overwhelm. This takes form for people in different ways, so I will try to be a bit generic with what I share here. I do believe that the most common stressors are around time (trying to fit everything in) roles, for example balancing work and family obligations, money and expectations of self and others. Although my husband and I are now empty nesters, and I have a lot more time now that I am not ‘employed’ at a ‘J.O.B’., I have felt that old twinge of worrying that I won’t get everything done, and someone will be disappointed (which for the record I’m pretty sure has never happened). That twinge is what inspired this post.

Here are some ideas:

  • Speak with any relevant others and set a spending limit.
  • Have a few simple timelines for what you need to get done.
  • Say no to anything that feels obligatory or you know you won’t enjoy. Yes, I’m serious.
  • Have a heart to heart conversation with your significant other, if appropriate about what you value and how you want to spend your time, energy and other resources.
  • Incorporate giving, charity or community.
  • If you have recently experienced a major transition or loss, think about creating a new Christmas (or what focus applies to you). ritual that honours that.
  • Have a heart to heart conversation with your authentic self - in what ways are old conditioned patterns creating a narrative that puts pressure on you? You could do this in a journal. What unrealistic expectations do you have about yourself and other people?
  • Take time to practice mindfulness, remember to breathe, engage all your senses, feel your feet on the floor or ground and really take in the moment you are in. Do this multiple times a day.
  • Remember to nourish yourself - mind, body and spirit - eat, hydrate and stick with your exercise routine (if you have one). This will help you stay in a good mindset, spirit and emotional vibration - this can only be good for other people, right?
  • Delegate - if you can offload any tasks - do so!

I hope you find the joy this season can bring!
